PVPC to Offer Free Web GIS Training for Municipal Officials

The Pioneer Valley Planning Commission will host two training workshops on GIS web services Thursday, October 21 and Wednesday, November 17 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Springfield Public Library Computer Lab, 220 State Street in Springfield. The free workshops are open to any town official, board member, or employee in the Pioneer Valley region.

Four communities—Chester, Huntington, Ludlow, and South Hadley—have participated as pilot project members. PVPC has provided each of the communities with interactive web mapping services that allow parcel mapping, aerial photography, query, printing, and more on the Internet. Pan and zoom in on a particular parcel or address; see all the properties owned by a particular owner and print out the results on your local printer. Visit the South Hadley GIS website at  http://66.152.242.251/SouthHadley/ParcelSearch.aspx to see this in action.

The Thursday, October 21 workshop is focused on how to use the four sites already up.  Municipal officials, board members, fire, police, and emergency responders from the four communities will receive first preference on registration. The Wednesday, November 17 workshop coincides with National GIS Day, and officials from other PVPC member communities are encouraged to come and see what PVPC may be able to do with computerized mapping and web services for their communities.

Space is limited. Please pre-register at least 48 hours before each workshop by contacting PVPC’s Jim Scace at (413) 781-6045 or jscace@pvpc.org.
